Severed by Lizzy Ford and Julia Crane

Two sisters with special gifts and an unbreakable bond ...

Cyena and Tyana were born to powerful parents who are among the ruling class on their planet. Their lives are pampered but isolated, constricted to the city walls in which they were born.

Fun loving with a rare but powerful mind power, Tyana is accustomed to being treated like a princess and using her influence to get anything she wants – including protecting her sister from the elders and students who look down on her. The opposite of Tyana in most ways, Cyena’s second-class mind skills make others view her as a blemish on the family bloodline. No one but her sister believes in her.

They don’t know that a war is brewing, until it erupts. A class war tears their perfect world a part, leaving them helpless, alone and worse –severed from one another.

Each girl will risk her life to find the other, and each will be challenged to hone her powers in order to survive environments unlike any they’ve ever experienced.

So what did I think?  Oh, you assume I read it.  Well, I did.  And it was great.  I've yet to read any for Julia's work (I know, what is wrong with me?), but I've loved everything from Lizzy and this was no exception.  The detail and the imagination to create this alternate universe astound and impress me.  They painted a picture of another world that makes you believe it really exists and they've seen it.  Hmm, maybe they have!

So I'm giving it 5 stars.  I wanted to give it 4 only because they're making me wait for the next one, but I can't really do that.  So 5 it is.

Blake or Seth: Promises, Promises series by Victoria Klahr

Love triangles.  Love them or hate them, many of our favorite books revolve around them these days.  We probably have Stephanie Meyer and the Twilight series to thank/blame for that.  Because suddenly all the talk was about which "Team" you were on.  Personally, I hate the team concept when it comes to characters in my favorite books.  So you'll notice that I never say that I'm Team A or Team B.  Why do I have to pick a team?  That doesn't mean I don't have an opinion on who should "get the girl."  And why is it that these love triangles always involve two guys vying for the affections of one girl.  Why is it one guy battling his inner turmoil over which girl to choose?  I guess that's a question for another day.

Recently, Victoria Klahr posed the question on her Facebook page about which team her readers are on...Seth or Blake.

If you have not read That's a Promise by Victoria Klahr, I urge you to stop reading this post because there will be LOTS of spoilers.  And by lots, I mean, I'll be giving away everything that we learned in book #1 of the series as I debate this very important topic.

(btw, it's only 99 cents, so you could always go buy it, read it and then come back to read this post.)
Amazon

So seriously, if you haven't read the book, STOP READING RIGHT NOW!!!  I mean NOW!! This very minute.  Don't go any further.

If you are still reading, I assume that means you have read That's a Promise.  Either that or you're a rebel and you don't care that I'm going to ruin nearly the entire book for you.  Well, you go on with your bad self, but don't get made at mean when there are no surprises left.  I bet you were one of those kids who peeked at all their Christmas presents too, weren't you?  Well I don't have time to deal with your shenanigans, so let's get on to the great debate.

Most people are wondering who Josie will choose.  But really, do we get to choose who we love?  I think not.  The heart decides and our brains don't always agree.  So which organ do you listen to?

Seth
Josie and Seth have been best friends forever.  He was there for the her in her darkest hours.  He witnessed her rape and near death and it nearly killed him.  And he nearly killed the man responsible.  He blamed himself for not being there to stop it and he swore he wouldn't let her get hurt like that again.  And sometime during their friendship, something clicked and he felt something more.  But he never told her.  So many could say that she belongs with Seth.  But wait, Seth broke his promise and he was the one who hurt her, and broke her heart.

But before we do that, a little about Blake.

Blake
Josie meets Blake and they have an instant connection and they quickly fall in love.  But Blake has a secret.  He doesn't know it at first, but he soon learns that Josie is the girl that his father raped andI nearly killed.  He tried to distance himself from her, but he couldn't stop the way he felt about her.  And he is drawn back to her.  He truly loves her and while he knows that he should tell her the ugly truth, he just can't bring himself to do it.

Without rehashing the entire story, I'll break it down as to who I think Josie should be with.  As for who her heart belongs to, I can't really say.  So this is based only on what we know so far.  On how each has treated her.  And of course, it is completely my own opinion.

I won't leave you hanging anymore.  I think it's Blake.  And now I'll tell you why.

Sure, Blake didn't tell Josie about his father. Someone else did.  But he wasn't doing that to hurt her.  He loved her. He wanted to protect her and while keeping it secret wasn't the best plan, honestly, it is what most people would do.  How many times have you chosen not to tell someone something because you know that they'll be hurt when they find out?

And yes, he left when he found out about the abortion, but that was how just about any guy would react if they found out that the woman they loved had aborted their baby without even talking to them first.

Now Seth.  He's supposed to be her best friend.  He asked her about using the photos in the showing when she was drunk.  Ok, sure, that might have been forgivable.  He goes on to say how much he loves her but then he goes and calls her a "callous and heartless bitch."  Who does that?  And then he leaves without looking back.

So maybe it's just me, but I have a really hard time forgiving a guy who calls any woman a "callous and heartless bitch", especially when it's a woman they supposedly love.

When it comes right down to it, Blake never did anything to intentionally hurt her.  Seth's name calling is unforgiveable to me.

But the choice may not even be Josie's to make.  First we need to find out if Blake can forgive Josie for aborting his child.  And if he can forgive, will he fight for her?

I guess we'll find out when the next book comes out.

Are You Listening by Michelle Grey

Are You Listening Cover Cancer snuck up on me when I least expected it. But I imagine everyone probably feels that way. When I got my diagnosis, I was relatively young and otherwise healthy. I was a busy mom, wife, employee and aspiring author. Priorities shifted, and so did my perspective. Throughout my experience, I sought to become educated and I learned many things – some tangible, some intangible, but all of which I’ll share with you in this quick story. My hope is to further educate and encourage every woman, even if cancer never touches you or anyone you love. Teaser:
He smirks and kisses me again. “You look a mess.” His words set a rush of trepidation throughout me, but he chuckles, kissing me greedily, delaying me from leaving. “A beautiful mess.”

I giggle, push on him and begin to leave him behind. I stumble out of the cubicle, leaving Jace to fix himself out. I go over to the restroom’s mirrors and dare myself to just look at my own reflection. I gasp when I do. Fuck! I’m an absolute mess! My lipstick is now smeared, my hair is unravelling and I know I have to look for a quick fix. I make sure the rest of it looks okay and fix my makeup before I text one of the girls to come to my aid. I can’t let Clara see me like this and I need an excuse.

‘Jace Mason took me against a cubicle door’ just isn’t going to cut it!

My hands are shaking as I quickly attempt to rectify the mess I am in. I need to be back out there with the other girls quickly, but I can’t do that looking like this. I need to be mingling with the clients before Clara even so much as thinks I’ve done a disappearing act.

“Will this help?”
I look up and Jace is behind me. I inwardly sigh. He can’t be here. My heart rate accelerates as I wonder if one of the girls will catch him here with me or if I’ll make it out alive. I look to his hand and he’s holding up four of my hairpins. I look back at his reflection in the mirror and can’t help but smile.

“Did you really think I’d feed you back to the lion’s mouth with so much as a strand of hair out of place?” he asks me sarcastically and I know him. He looks after me beyond belief. He drops his hands and comes to stand beside me. As he does, I just turn to face him and allow him to fix my hair back up into the side bun. Once he is done he runs his hand down my jaw bone until his fingers are cupping my chin. “I knew you were going to look stunning tonight, Joely, but I never expected this. You blew my breath away.” He leans in, his lips just before mine as he finishes his statement. “Again.”
This time he kisses me with restraint, just giving me enough to seal his comment. When he leaves me this time I’m less flustered and I’m ready to take on what awaits on the other side of the door. I spend a few seconds just staring at myself, before I hurriedly look into my clutch bag for my makeup and touch it all up. I make sure my hair is pristine and that I don’t look freshly fucked.

Without Doubt by C.J. Acevedo

Synopsis
Ava Sterling is tough and the most straight laced girl you will ever meet. Her family and her past have managed to alter her future permanently and she has no desire to allow anyone else into her life or her heart for fear of rejection or further altering.  Ava is alone in the world with the exception of the grandest responsibility she did not create on her own but on her own she will carry for the rest of her life.

Declan James is an MMA fighter, party all night kind of guy. Responsibility is nowhere to be found in his life or so he allows everyone around him to believe. Coming from wealth and a carefree lifestyle, Declan gets what he wants, always. And what he wants is Ava. In his pursuit of getting what he wants, Ava in his bed, his plan changes quickly without his consent. Against his plans of being the next hot bachelor to cross the tabloids as he makes his way to being the Ultimate Light Heavyweight Champion, Declan falls in love. He falls in love without hesitation and without doubt.

Neither Declan nor Ava are aware that fate has inconveniently intertwined their lives forever. Will they be able to survive the aftermath of the truth?

CJ Acevedo has lived all over the state of California, Central, South, North and finally landing back somewhere in the middle. She married the boy she fell for when she was only eleven years old and together they have two beautiful heathens. CJ obviously loves to read and write. She can watch the Giant’s play baseball but hates football. She bakes when she’s sad, runs when she’s mad and dances when she’s happy (even if she cant find a rhythm to save her life). If you’re looking for her and can’t seem to find her, look on the staircase, it’s her favorite spot to read.

I am reading Without Doubt right now, so far...loving it!  I've already developed a little crush on Declan and I love Ava.  She's feisty!  I love that.  But she's got secrets and I can't wait to find out what they are.  Keep your eyes open because I'll be posting a review once I'm done reading.

Without Doubt is the 2nd in the Without Series, but I'm guessing you don't need to read them in order as I didn't read the first (but will be adding that to my TBR right now) and I am not feeling at all lost.  And after reading the book blurb for Without Boundaries, I see different characters so it looks like my assessment might be correct and you don't need to read them in order.

That's a Promise by Victoria Klahr

That's a Promise left me wanting more and thankfully, there are still 2 more in the series to come.  I suspect the roller coaster ride will continue in the next one though, so it will be torture.  Sweet torture, but still torture.

Josie Sommers is a young adult who is trying to reclaim her life after a very traumatic experience.  Through the course of the first book, we are taken back and forth in time as we learn about her life, her loves, her friends, and the devastating event that has come to shape her life.  We meet Seth, her best friend who has always been there when she has needed him.  And then we meet Blake, the man who could be the love of her life.

But life isn't a fairytale and not everyone gets a happily ever after...or do they?  Hey, this is a 3 book series.  I have no idea if everyone gets a happily ever after.  I can hope.

There are Secrets!  When will we ever learn that secrets aren't good.  You would think that Josie would have learned this, yet she still has her secrets.  Will she ever learn?  Will she find her happily ever after?  Guess we'll just have to keep reading to find out.

I really enjoyed That's a Promise.  There is nothing typical about it, yet it's still real.  Actually, that's probably what makes it real.  It's not a cookie cutter love story.

I will tell you that the story jumps back and forth in time and I know that some people will find.that annoying, but it didn't bother me at all.  I had no problem keeping the story straight and I think that is a testament to the author because she keeps the story flowing without confusion.

Overall, a great debut novel and I'm looking forward to reading the next one.  But why...why do I keep getting wrapped up in series?  And another love triangle?  Really!  Anyway...I gave it 4 stars on Amazon and Goodreads...but that's a very strong 4 stars, inching it's way toward 5.

This book is recommended for 18+ due to sexual situations.

That's a Promise on Amazon for Kindle  (currently 99 cents at the time I'm posting this).

Barnes and Noble  ($2.99)

Oh and why not...how about a little teaser?

“I’m not going to take you here at a bar, Josie, but make no mistake, I will make you come multiple times before the night is over.” He leaned in and licked from my neck down my chest. “I’ll help you out for now, but I’m not done with you tonight. Got it?” he asked before nipping at my cleavage. I nodded, because that’s all I wanted. I needed all of him that night. I couldn’t wait any longer.

Heart of Fire series by Lizzy Ford

I'm a big fan of Lizzy Ford.  I think I spent the entire month of July reading Lizzy's books.  It is so very easy to get wrapped up in her stories.

Lilly's newest series is Heart of Fire and it is classic Lizzy Ford...if there is such a thing.  The story immediately grabs you and does not let go.  The characters get under your skin.  But this is Lizzy Ford, so this isn't your typical girl meets boy romance.  Oh no, there has to be something magical and mystical about these characters.  And in Heart of Fire, we're dealing with Dragons and other shapeshifters.

Chace is a sexy Dragon shifter.  But he has some  issues (who doesn't?) and he doesn't want to be a shifter anymore.  And so he makes a deal with the devil...not the real Devil, but close enough.  And then he meets Skylar and things really heat up.

Sky is a slayer...or is she?  Are these dreams she's having or are they memories?  Is her entire life a lie?  And what is the truth behind this intense bond with Chace?

He's her Dragon.  She's his Sky.

If you are a Lizzy Ford fan, you want to read this series.  If you haven't read Lizzy Ford yet, you really should and why not start here.

Easy 5 stars!   Book 3 is due out in mid-January.  I can not wait!!

2013 - A Year in Review

Happy New Year!

So how was your 2013?  Mine was like no other.  I could never have even imagined it.  It far exceeded any expectations that I had.  And I've met so many amazingly wonderful people.

First and foremost, this blog was born in 2013!  I hope you've enjoyed it so far and I hope that it only gets bigger and better in 2014.  I'm still not sure I know what I'm doing, but I'm just going with the flow.

I do want to share some of the authors and books that had a huge impact on me this year.  I hope that you've read some of these, and if not, think about adding them to your TBR (to-be-read) for 2014.  What better way to start the year than with a good book?

Lacey Weatherford:  What can I say about Lacey?  Let's start with her books.  I started with the first in the Of Witches and Warlocks series and quickly read through everything else she had written.  I finished the entire series, then it was onto Chasing Nikki and Finding Chase, followed by Crush.  And when Smitten came out in June, it led to the start of this blog.    Fire & Ice might just be my favorite of Lacey 's books, but everything she writes is amazing.  But Lacey is more than just a great author.  She is a wonderful person who truly loves her family, friends and fans.  I feel blessed to have met her!

Belinda Boring:  Belinda is known as the Queen of Swoon, but I like to call her the Queen of Cliffhangers.  Have you read her Mystic Wolves series?  Every single book in the series leaves you hanging and begging for the next one.  It's torture really, but in the best possible way.  And Loving Liberty, an amazing story about living the life you were meant to live and not the one that others had mapped out for you.  What can I say about Belinda as a person?  She is such a sweetheart and she makes me laugh all the time.  I cannot wait until we get to meet in person!

Cambria Hebert:  I fell in love with Cambria's Take It Off  series after I received an ARC of the first book, Torch.  And then when Tease came out, I knew I'd found another new author to love.  Apparently this was her first foray into Contemporary romance but trust me when I tell you that she can write, no matter what genre.  And have you read Charmed?  OMG, the woman made me fall in love with the grim reaper.  How does one do that?

Kamery Solomon:  Kamery is one of my favorite friends of 2013.  I absolutely loved the first book in her God Chronicles series, Zeus.  And until I read her novella, Forever, I thought I hated novellas.  But Kamery was able to tell a complete story in a short space and I loved it.   And I love her.  She is her mother's daughter, but she is also her own woman.  She has big dreams (have you read Big Apple Dreams?) and I really hope all her dreams come true!  I know I'll always be cheering her on.

Micalea Smeltzer:  I found Micalea simply because I loved the cover of Finding Olivia  Yep, I bought her book because of the cover.  Whoever said you can't judge a book by its cover has no idea what they're talking about.  But enough about the cover, because Micalea is a fantastic author and her writing speaks for itself.  She paints such beautiful pictures with her words and her characters feel like friends.  And I'm so happy to call her my friend!

Bella Roccaforte:  If you are a fan of paranormal, you must read INK: Fine Lines.  Bella's debut novel is fantastic and I can not wait to read the next one.  And the love triangle...this isn't Twilight.  There are crazy things going on in Bella's head and I'm so glad she's putting them down on paper. Bella is my newest friend and she has been such a great supporter of the page in that short time.  I don't know what I'd do without her.

Jennifer Culbreth, Emily Hemmer, T.H.Snyder, J.J. DiBenedetto...and so many others who reached out to me over the past year. To all those who wrote fabulous books in 2013.  Thank you for all that you do and I can not wait to see where you take us in 2014.

And to all the authors I'm just meeting or who are just starting out, I look forward to getting to know you and your characters.

But I can't forget people like the beautiful Kimberly Tallman.  Such a gorgeous cover model and just one of the sweetest people I have met this year.  I adore you.  And the amazing Regina Wamba at Mae I Design.  Every cover she creates is a work of art!  I honestly do buy books because she did the cover.  It's true!

And the people I could never forget.  Lisa, Kandi, Olivia, Samien, Dianne, Toni...the friends who love to read as much as I do and they share their love of books and authors and bloggers every day.  Just knowing these lovely ladies are there is sometimes what gets me through the day.  Thank you!!!

If someone had told me a year ago that this is where I'd be today, I would have thought they were crazy.  I have over 1000 followers on my Facebook page. I have authors emailing and messaging me, sometimes just to chat.  My name and this blog have appeared in several books and even on the back covers of two of those books.

This all started because I love to read.  That love will never die and I am so glad that it has brought me to where we are today.  I want to thank each and every author who writes these amazing books.for us.  And I want to thank everyone who follows the blog and the page.  You have no idea how much it means to me and I will never be able to put it into words.  I hope you will continue to follow along in 2014 and see where this amazing journey takes us next.

Out of Turn by Tiffany A. Snow

I can not even convey to you what the Kathleen Turner series does to me, how it makes me feel.  I only hope that you find a book or a series that effects you this way.  Or maybe you don't want to read a book that totally consumes you.  One that haunts your every thought.  Maybe you don't want characters that live in your head, taking up permanent residence so that they are all you think about. It's too late for me because that is exactly what this series has done to me.  That and so much more.

I instantly fell in love with these characters in No Turning Back and my adoration has never wavered.  As soon as I finished book #1, No Turning Back, I immediately downloaded #2, Turn to Me.  As soon as I finished Turn to Me, I immediately read them again.  I have never done that before with any book. Book 3, Turning Point, wasn't due out for a few more months so I had to wait and I really considered just reading them for a third time.  But I thought I should probably read something else.  And so I did.  I read many good books, but nothing was as good as the Kathleen Turner series.

I am consumed by this story.  I can not get enough of Kat, Blane and Kade.  The rollercoaster ride of emotion that Tiffany A. Snow takes me on can not be explained.  Every high and every low is felt in my stomach, my heart, my soul.  I have felt every heartache right alongside Kathleen.  She lives inside me.

If you've been reading the series, you know about Kat, Blane and Kade.  And we ended Turning Point (Book #3) with Blane accusing Kat of cheating on him with his brother, Kade.  Blane's Uncle, who had been trying to get Kat out of the picture all along, had set it up to look like there was something going on and Blane believed him.  The engagement was off and Kat, Kade and Blane all went their separate ways.

Book 4, Out of Turn begins with Kat trying to get her life back together.  Trying to move on, but in my opinion, not very successfully.  Kat loves Blane and is absolutely devastated that he would believe that she was capable of hurting him that way.  How could he believe his Uncle over her?  And where is Kade and does he know what his brother has accused them of?

When Blane suddenly reappears in her life, she can't handle it because she still loves him with everything she's got and she makes a frantic phone call reaching out to the one person who could change everything...for all of them.

Blane knows that he was wrong, but how does he apologize? How does he make it right?  Is it too late?  Has he pushed Kathleen right into his brother's arms?

By the end of Out of Turn, I was crying...seriously bawling.  I was an emotional mess.  I can only begin to imagine what I will be like after reading Point of No Return, knowing that it is the last and final in the series.  Dear Kleenex...send me a case.  I'm going to need them.

INK: Fine Lines by Bella Roccaforte

Murder!  Strange dreams!  And a love triangle!  You'll find it all in INK: Fine Lines from Bella Roccaforte.

Shay creates comic books, but there is nothing funny about them or about the fact that she's now being accused of murder because her latest scenes are eerily familiar to the scene of a horrific crime.  How is it that her dreams are becoming a reality?  Can she prove that it's just a coincidence?  But then again, is it?

And then there is the love triangle.  Two childhood friends who grew to be rivals.  One has been Mr. Reliable, always there when she needs him, except when he's hitting the bottle.  And the other, the one who seems to really own her heart, but he runs every time things get too close.  Will he stick around this time when she needs him most?  Both are fighting demons of their own too, along with fighting each other, so can they keep it together to help Bella through the craziness that has become her life?

Fine Lines is the first in the INK series, although, there is a little prequel, INK: Sketches, available too which takes place a year and a half prior to Fine Lines.  I need to go read that one now, just because I want to, not because I feel like I need to.

You can get your copy of INK: Fine Lines
At Amazon for your Kindle or if you like to kick it old school, the Paperback.
Or Barnes and Noble

To find out all you need to know about Bella, you can check out her various pages:

So now I'm waiting for INK: Vanishing Point so I can find out what happens next.  That's right folks...she left us with a cliffhanger!  I don't know the exact release date, but I suspect it is very soon!!  Can't wait.

In the meantime...I bet you're wondering what I rated INK: Fine Lines.  Well wonder no more, I give it 5 stars!  If you love a good paranormal story, one that is unlike anything else you've read, you should really check out INK: Fine Lines

And now Belinda Boring has given us an extra special treat this holiday season with this wonderful compilation of memories from their past Christmasas.  Read about Darcy's Christmases before she met Mason and joined the pack.  See how the Elf on a Shelf torments one pack member.  And even take a walk down memory lane with our favorite vampire, Devlin, to see how he spends the holiday.
